Customer Review: Great game, great movie/toy tie-in, but expandable no more

I am quite angry with Mattel. A few SHORT years ago, they came out with "AcceleRacers," a series of cars and a set of movies that tie into them. As it turns out, those movies are unexpectedly good! I'm an adult watching them with my two young boys, and I find myself completely entertained every time we watch them.

Recently we discovered an `extra' on one of the DVDs that we hadn't before noticed for an AcceleRacers Collectible Card Game. Having been through the Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon CCG crazes with my boys, I was no stranger to this concept, but this particular card game looked quite attractive, so I ordered this starter set.

It turns out that the AcceleRacers CCG tie-in is my favorite of all the card games we have. It's fun, challenging, and yet the rules are quite simple, compared to other, tiresome, overly-complicated CCGs, and they really do add back to the enjoyment of the movies.

Now the bad news. Even though this CCG is only about 2-years-old, it's completely orphaned. Since buying this starter set, I've had to fight others on a popular auction site tooth & nail to get a few CCG booster packs and the tie-in hot wheels cars (which also came with cards). Mattel had a great thing going with this set and discontinued it before we even found out it existed! They really made a mistake; the AcceleRacers micro-franchise is the best thing they've done in 30 years, and they quickly dropped it. I can count the number of toy tie-in movies that are actually good on one hand (Dragons `Fire & Ice,' one or two of the `Bionicle' discs), but the AcceleRacers movies are far out in front, and this card game was very well designed. I wish they'd bring it back!

This starter set contains all you need to play the game, and appears to still be available, even if the cars and booster packs aren't. So for the money, it's worth picking up. But you just may find - as we did - that it will lead to disappointment because it really was so well made and there's no way to expand it.

Hot Wheels Acceleracers - Hot Wheels AcceleRacers, Vol. 3 - Breaking Point (with car)

Hot Wheels AcceleRacers, Vol. 3 - Breaking Point (with car)

Hot Wheels AcceleRacers, Vol. 3 - Breaking Point (with car)

The exciting AcceleRacers saga continues in Hot Wheels AcceleRacers, Volume 3: Breaking Point, which picks up precisely where Hot Wheels AcceleRacers 2: The Speed of Silence left off. Kurt's brother, Wylde, is captured and physically altered by the evil Gelorum--though to what end isn't clear until the final scene. Meanwhile, a couple of AcceleRacers inventor Dr. Tezla's human drivers take their personal conflict into a Neon Pipeline realm, where they race against one another for awhile but soon confront Gelorum's monstrous, car-eating Sweepers and the unstoppable Racing Drones. Luckily, muscle-bound driver Pork Chop is determined, in his own laconic way, to bring his endangered teammates back from oblivion. Unlike the previous two AcceleRacers movies, Volume 3: Breaking Point is less a self-contained adventure than an obvious link in a larger story. But it's easy to get hooked by the drama and rich, computer-animated visuals, even if one isn't familiar with the preceding tales. --Tom Keogh

Customer Review: wrong dvd

we ordered both vol. 3 and vol. 4 of the AccelerRacers.

although the packaging on both the case and disk of vol. 3 said it was Breaking Point, the actual movie was Ultimate Race which is vol. 4. My son did not let me know this before it was past time to return the product , so we are stuck with 2 copies of vol. 4.

check your copy when you receive it to make sure it is the correct volume.

Customer Review: good dvd for boys (mainly) aged 7 and above

The dvd has a lot of action (sometimes less is better). Even though my son could not follow the story line, he realy liked it. He said the cars and the races were real cool. Maybe when he turns 8 he will better understand what the story is about.

Hot Wheels AcceleRacers, Vol. 2: The Speed of Silence

Hot Wheels AcceleRacers, Vol. 2: The Speed of Silence

Customer Review: Great Racing, But Who (Or What) Are The Silencerz?

The story of Vert Wheeler and his racing friends that began in "Hot Wheels World Race" and "Hot Wheels Acceleracers: Ignition" continues here.

"Vert" Wheeler and the rest of the Teku racing team must work with their rivals the Metal Maniacs to drive in the "Racing Realms", other dimensional race tracks that test a driver's racing skills to their extreme limit. Whoever reaches the finish line of each realm first receives an "Accelercharger", which grants the user's vehicle a special power (frictionless driving, hyperspeed, etc). Scattered throughout the realms are "Hyperpods", which the driver's car can attach to give it special abilities as well.

Unfortunately, the evil Gelorum has obtained the Wheel Of Power (see the Hot Wheels World Race DVD) and her robots will stop at nothing to obtain all the Accelerchargers!! If they do, they will be able to take over the world, which is NOT a good thing for us humans!

Not only that, but a mysterious THIRD racing team, the Silencerz, have shown up! Who (and what) are they, and are they on the side of good or evil?

This episode does a great job of propelling the main storyline, as well as moving along several subplots. It's always fun to watch adventures with the Hot Wheels drivers as they take on Gelorum and her drones on fantastic race tracks.

A lot of the reservations I had about the Hot Wheels Acceleracers : Ignition release are not as strong here.

- The Teku and Metal Maniacs now appear more as rival racing teams (which they should have been anyway) as opposed to rival street racing gangs.

- The physical violence content has been reduced as well. There's nothing on this disc that resembles the opening sequence of the Ignition DVD when Dr Tezla was attacked by the drones.

My children enjoy this DVD, and look forward to future Hot Wheels Acceleracers DVDs.

The Cartoon Network has already broadcast the third part of the Hot Wheels Accceleracers saga, Breaking Point, and will be airing the fourth episode "Hot Wheels Accceleracers: The Ultimate Race" on October 1st of 2005. If you missed part 3, they usually rebroadcast them the day before the new episode, so look for it on Friday, September 30, 2005.

This DVD comes with 6 micro-episodes, that contain racing and plot elements in realms not shown in the main movie (the Cliffside Realm and the Ice Realm).

Check out my reviews of the Hot Wheels World Race and Hot Wheels Acceleracers: Ignition DVDs for more information on those titles.

Customer Review: son loves hotwheels...

My son was 5 years old when he received all the hotwheel DVDs I could find. He loves them. He is now 6 and still watches them like he is watching them for the first time. Great buy.

Customer Review: Have seen them a million times now!!

My son has this entire series, and I have to sit through at least one of them every day. He is 5, is enamored with cars, including Hot Wheels, and loves these movies more than anything. They aren't my first choice in viewing as a 30 year old female, but they really aren't too bad, so I don't complain much. In fact - thank God for these movies, it's the only way I get cleaning done at my house!!!!! I hope they come out with more.

Customer Review: The Best HotWheels Ever

We purchased this product for our 5 years old boy, but it is great for the 9 years old boy too. They are enjoying it a lot. Half of the peaces are flexible they are very hard to break. Most of the HotWheels cars that they already had fit in the trak. Don't miss it, is the best HotWheels race track ever. A.H.

Customer Review: A little too much

My 6 year old LOVED this. I mean, REALLY loved it. Problem was, he ran it so much that we ran through batteries like there was no tomorrow. It was fun, once he figured out the schematics of the whole thing, he wouldn't leave it alone. It was noisy, but that didn't bother him. Setting up the 'globe' to knock down became too much of a hassle for him, as he couldn't figure out how to get it together, so he gave up on that but still adored the thing. Unfortunately, it took up too much space in his small room and had to be given up to make room for other stuff. Poor kid. Once we took it apart, we could never find every piece for it again. Thankfully he was happy with the fact that he got to keep the cool cars. I'd definitely recommend this toy, though, to anyone with the space for it. Pretty cool. Keep a stock of batteries on hand!
