Customer Review: Great game, great movie/toy tie-in, but expandable no more
I am quite angry with Mattel. A few SHORT years ago, they came out with "AcceleRacers," a series of cars and a set of movies that tie into them. As it turns out, those movies are unexpectedly good! I'm an adult watching them with my two young boys, and I find myself completely entertained every time we watch them.
Recently we discovered an `extra' on one of the DVDs that we hadn't before noticed for an AcceleRacers Collectible Card Game. Having been through the Yu-Gi-Oh and Pokemon CCG crazes with my boys, I was no stranger to this concept, but this particular card game looked quite attractive, so I ordered this starter set.
It turns out that the AcceleRacers CCG tie-in is my favorite of all the card games we have. It's fun, challenging, and yet the rules are quite simple, compared to other, tiresome, overly-complicated CCGs, and they really do add back to the enjoyment of the movies.
Now the bad news. Even though this CCG is only about 2-years-old, it's completely orphaned. Since buying this starter set, I've had to fight others on a popular auction site tooth & nail to get a few CCG booster packs and the tie-in hot wheels cars (which also came with cards). Mattel had a great thing going with this set and discontinued it before we even found out it existed! They really made a mistake; the AcceleRacers micro-franchise is the best thing they've done in 30 years, and they quickly dropped it. I can count the number of toy tie-in movies that are actually good on one hand (Dragons `Fire & Ice,' one or two of the `Bionicle' discs), but the AcceleRacers movies are far out in front, and this card game was very well designed. I wish they'd bring it back!
This starter set contains all you need to play the game, and appears to still be available, even if the cars and booster packs aren't. So for the money, it's worth picking up. But you just may find - as we did - that it will lead to disappointment because it really was so well made and there's no way to expand it.
